In honour of Jake Gyllenhaal’s upcoming chiller Nightcrawler, where Jake stars as a young man discovering the world of crime journalism in the ‘underbelly’ of LA, we thought we’d take a look at the Top 5 nice guys playing creepy guys in the movies.
We all know Jake Gyllenhaal as the smiley guy in The Day After Tomorrow, or the po-faced newbie in Zodiac. But in Nightcrawler, Jake looks pretty creepy.
See below for similar transformations.
5. Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory)
For anyone blisfully unawares of any other Wonka movie than the plastic and diabolical Tim Burton-Johnny Depp effort, then you must see this. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is how the book should have been made. But that’s by-the-by, the real point is that Gene Wilder, normally such a lovely guy, often plays Wonka incredibly creepily. The above clip proves it.
4. Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates (Psycho)
Ok, ok so the 1998 Psycho remake is no match for Hitchcock’s original, but it is remarkable if only for how we can see funny, happy, nice guy Vince Vaughn play creepy. If you’re used to the Vince of Couples Retreat and Swingers, be prepared…
3. Andy Serkis as Gollum (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy)
Who can forget the impact Gollum had on the movie world when he burst onto our screens in the early 00s? Only now motion capture is becoming acknowledged as a genuine form of performance, but Andy Serkis has been wowing us for over a decade. His King Kong and Planet of the Apes work is perfectly nice and fits his real-life persona, but Gollum is a creepy little sucker.
2. Jim Carrey as Count Olaf (A Series of Unfortunate Events)
It must be said that A Series of Unfortunate Events has to be one of the funniest and most underrated Jim Carrey movies of his back catalogue, but it doesn’t stop his character Count Olaf – a domineering, money-grabbing, slimy child-minder – being creepy as hell. Turns out, Jim Carrey without make-up = funny. Jim Carrey with creepy make-up = your worst nightmare.
1. Heath Ledger as The Joker (The Dark Knight)
In one of the best movies ever made there is one of the best performances ever put to film. That performance is funny, enigmatic and shocking, but most of all it is creepy. Heath Ledger, the fresh young face from A Knight’s Tale and 10 Things I Hate About You that we all grew to love, chilled us to our very core with this masterful interpretation of The Joker. Creepiness level: 100.
